Recently author of rather brutal remarks on the Brittney Griner case, LeBron James has thus aroused the anger of many fans. From now on, it is up to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to have spoken on the subject. As always, the Hall of Famer did not go with dead hands.
The Brittney Griner affair in Russia continues to be emulated in the United States, and it is not about to get better. Indeed, since the WNBA star decided to plead guilty after being charged with drug trafficking and possession following his arrest at an airport, she faces up to 10 years in prison. It could end her career… Measures are therefore taken to try to repatriate her, but things are not progressing. What to push LeBron James has a rather shattering observation on the file.
Unsurprisingly, a major part of the US population did not like the words of the King at all, who suffered a hell of a shitstorm in response. To the point where he had to justify himself for his words… Nevertheless, he also had the right to a little support in this story, in the person of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Lakers legend addressed the subject on his blog recently, clearly coming to the defense of the four-time NBA champion:
Kareem fiercely defends LeBron James
I wish people could understand what it’s like to have every word you’ve spoken or written analyzed. It’s like putting a t-shirt in the washing machine until it disintegrates into a ball of soggy lint. Sometimes everything you say can be interpreted to mean what someone wants it to mean. One size fits all prejudices.
In this case, james is right. After five months in a Russian prison, Griner may very well feel abandoned. Like most people. You may know in your head that the United States is working furiously behind the scenes on your behalf, but it doesn’t feel like it. Add to that being black, being female, and being non-binary — which groups have been attacked by the U.S. Supreme Court and dozens of Republican-run states — and you might sit in your cell worrying that you are not a priority in your country.
James has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to community and country too often for it to be questioned now. He has done as much, if not more, than most people to raise awareness and rally support for Griner, and for that he is to be congratulated by everyone.
Very strong words from the all-time leading scorer, who knows exactly what he’s talking about given his background.
As KAJ so aptly puts it, every statement from an athlete is dissected in every possible way, especially in a time as overhyped as ours. The former big man himself experienced this decades ago, boycotting the Olympic Games in order to fight for civil rights. So he understands very well what L-Train meant, which was simply trying to say that Griner didn’t necessarily have to feel so supported.
LeBron James may have been very clumsy in his formulation about Brittney Griner, it does not mean that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will scold him. On the contrary, the legend of the Lakers fully supports him in his reasoning, in the heart of the storm.
