Since the affair of the slap of the Oscars, the latter is discreet in the middle of showbusiness. His attitude was widely displeased and could well harm his career.
Three months after the Oscars 2022, the ceremony continues to be talked about, but not for the cinema. Onstage at the event, Will Smith brutally slapped Chris Rock after he quibbled about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia. Out of himself, the actor had violently attacked his colleague, before bursting into tears a few minutes later when he received the Oscar for best actor for his role in “The Williams Method”. Inevitably, the actor’s gesture was not without consequences, and these continue to fall over the weeks and announcements.

Will Smith and the Oscars, it’s over (for a while)
A few days after the ceremony, Will Smith made his mea culpa via a press release, in which he announced his decision to resign from the Academy of Oscars of which he was a member. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone who was in the audience or in their homes. I resign as a Fellow of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any consequences the Board of Directors deems appropriate.”
He believes he has “betrayed the confidence of the Academy”, and the latter visibly shares his opinion, since the Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has declared for its part: “Mr. to attend any Academy event or program, in person or virtually” for the next 10 years.
Stoppage for several projects
The Academy of Oscars is not the only one to have made decisions that will penalize Will Smith in the rest of his career. Netflix notably made the decision to cancel the sequel to “Bright”, without specifying however whether this choice had a link with its attitude. However, the timing seems to match, especially since the platform had already decided to pause another project, the feature film “Fast and Loose”. For its part, the Giant Freakin Robot site claims that Dwayne Johnson is in talks with Disney for a role in the sequel to “Aladdin”, and some people are wondering that he would not be chosen to take the place of Will Smith in the role of the genius, his attitude not being really in phase with the values of the house with the big ears.
On the other hand, the film “Bad Boys 4” should not slip through the fingers of the actor. Long considered “in danger” because of the gesture of the latter, the president of Sony, Tom Rothman, wanted to dispel the trouble in an interview with Deadline: “The film is still in development. There was no no brakes to put on the production since it was already not progressing. What happened is of course unfortunate, but I do not think it is my place to comment on this incident; all I can say is that is that I’ve known Will Smith for years, and I know he’s a good person.”
What about his mental health?
Beyond the consequences on his career, Will Smith’s private life and mental health have also suffered from the situation. The British newspaper The Sun notably claimed that the actor would have entered rehab, not for a drug or alcohol problem, but to learn how to better manage his stress and violence. “The impact of criticism over the past few days has hit Will Smith hard, so he will get the help he needs to manage his stress. This is without a doubt the biggest battle of his career. He will recover. -focus on himself and work to see how he can move forward,” says a source close to the actor.
Rumors also claimed that Jada Pinkett Smith would have decided to leave her husband following this case. Information that has not been confirmed by the main interested parties. At the beginning of June, on her show “Red Table Talk”, the main interested party simply mentioned her desire to see the situation calm down between Chris Rock and Will Smith: “My dearest hope is that these two intelligent men have the opportunity to heal, to discuss and to reconcile. Given the state the world is in right now, we need both of them. And above all, we need each other, more than ever.” And to conclude: “In the meantime, Will and I continue to do what we have been doing for 28 years, which is to try to understand this thing called life.”
