Barrere qualifies for the second round, not Halys

The 19-year-old Spaniard, 6th in the world, faces Argentinian Londero for the last match of the day on center court.

Clara Burel, 94th in the world, gave in under the powerful assaults of the Greek Maria Sakkari (3rd) who won 6-2, 6-3, Sunday in the 1st round of Roland-Garros.

Sakkari, semi-finalist last year, will face the Czech Karolina Muchova (81st) who dismissed another Frenchwoman, Carole Monnet (253rd). Faced with Sakkari, Burel held the showdown but made mistakes that did not allow him to crack the Greek fortress.

Like the first set where she conceded a first break on a double fault, before offering the round to her opponent on a completely missed service game where she committed an unforced error and three double faults including two of straight on the last two points.

In the second set, Burel immediately took his opponent’s serve but the latter caught up in stride and managed the decisive break to lead 5-3 service to follow to conclude.

She did not miss the opportunity and took advantage of a final unforced error from Burel (the 27th in total) to win. During his first participation, in 2020, Burel had reached the 3rd round. But last year, like this year, she bowed out.

Clara Burel is the third of the four French women competing on Sunday to be eliminated after Harmony Tan and Carole Monnet. Kristina Mladenovic faces Leylah Fernandez in the evening. In the men’s draw, Quentin Halys was eliminated but Grégoire Barrère qualified.

Led two sets to nil, the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (n°9) overthrew the Préuvien Varillas, from the qualifications (2-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3) and went up with the second round.

The French Quentin Halys resisted the giant John Isner until the end, but he lost in 4 sets (7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6). It is the 3rd Habs to be eliminated after Tan and Monnet in girls.

The French Grégoire Barrère managed to extricate himself from the trap set by the Japanese Taro Daniel and won in five sets (3-6, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4). He could face a compatriot in the next round if Quentin Halys manages to get rid of the American giant John Isner. The match is currently very tight: one round between the two men.

Opposed to Andrey Kuznetsov, Diego Schwartzman ensured his qualification. The Argentinian was however scared in the second set by losing 6-1. But the one who was favorite on paper did not doubt for long and won his match of the day (3-6, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6).

The fight is fierce between Taro Daniel and Grégoire Barrère. Defeated in the third set, the French won the next round allowing him to put the counters to zero (3-6).

In 2016, when Geoffrey Blancaneaux won Roland-Garros juniors against Félix Auger-Aliassime, Michel, his dad, had crazy dreams for his son. The world No. 1 and big favorite in the women’s draw Iga Swiatek will open the second day of Roland-Garros on Monday at the Central, where Rafael Nadal will succeed him, then the men’s defending champion Novak Djokovic for the first night of the 2022 edition.

Ten French will enter the competition including Diane Parry who will face defending champion Barbora Krejcikova on the Philippe-Chatrier court, Corentin Moutet who will play against Stan Wawrinka on the Suzanne-Lenglen as well as Richard Gasquet who will challenge Lloyd Harris there.

Océane Dodin, Manuel Guinard and Benoît Paire will play on the Simonne-Mathieu.

Like Harmony Tan, the Frenchwoman Carole Monnet also lost to Karolina Muchova in straight sets (3-6, 3-6).

Eliminated in the first round by Camila Osorio (6-4, 6-3), Harmony Tan confided in this defeat at the microphone of RMC Sport: “I had a moment of frustration in the first set. I don’t have too many regrets about the game. I made some mistakes but at least I didn’t push the ball today.”

The Frenchwoman also complimented her opponent of the day: “We already played each other last year, I knew she was a girl with a varied game. She raised her level of play, at first she was more shy, She relaxed, she played well today.”

If he had lost the first set against Taro Daniel (6-3), Grégoire Barrère was able to recover by winning the second set (2-6). But the Japanese took control of the game by winning the third set (6-0). The Frenchman no longer has the right to make mistakes.

Double finalist of Roland-Garros, Dominic Thiem is already eliminated in the first round, in three sets against Hugo Dellien (6-3, 6-2, 6-4). The Austrian has been back on the ATP circuit for several weeks, after several months off due to a wrist injury.

No problem for Grigor Dimitrov, seeded number 18), who eliminated in three sets in three sets the American Marcos Giron (6-1, 6-1, 6-1).

The French Harmony Tan, 106th in the world, was beaten Sunday in the 1st round of Roland-Garros by the Colombian Camila Osorio (66th) in two sets 6-4, 6-3, becoming the first player eliminated from the 2022 edition of the Major on clay.

In four participations, Tan, 24, has only reached the second round once, in 2021. She was the first of the 28 French players involved (15 men, 13 women) to enter the competition.
